Litters must be registered by the American Kennel Club within six months from the date of birth (Chapter 3, Section 4 of the Rules Applying to Registration and Discipline).
The litter owner needs to complete an AKC Litter Application. The application requires basic information, such as the date of birth, number of males and females in the litter, the parent's registered names and numbers, and the owner's address and signature. There is a litter registration fee of $25.00 plus $2.00 per puppy. Registrations take approximately 18 working days from the date mailed to AKC to be processed and returned to the owner. After the litter application is processed, we issue the dog registration applications. Those are the forms that the litter owner signs over to the new owners. It is then up to each new owner to complete and mail the application to the AKC so their dog is individually registered.

For a duplicate litter kit
The litter owner needs to fill out the Duplicate Litter Kit Request form which can be found at http://www.akc.org/pdfs/masterform.cfm.

Example of how AKC reissues the litter kits: If there are five dogs in a litter, we will issue forms /01, /02, /03, /04 and /05. If a duplicate form is issued, a new sequence number is created rather than duplicating an existing sequence number. Thus the last sequence number for dogs out of a litter will be one greater than the number of pups in the litter for each duplicate form issued. In this example the next form would be /06, then /07, and so on.

For a duplicate individual dog registration application:
The litter owner needs to fill out the Duplicate Dog Registration Application form which can be found at http://www.akc.org/pdfs/masterform.cfm. 

Note: The only person who can request another copy of the dog's registration application is the litter owner. If you are not the litter owner, you should get in touch with the litter owner and have that individual request another copy.

Answer: The AKC's DNA programs have resulted in an unprecedented level of accuracy to the AKC registry by evaluating the parentage of many AKC dogs and litters. However, a very small percentage of dogs are found, often years after birth, to have an unknown ancestor. All AKC registered dogs that are descendants of the unknown ancestor will have their registration downgraded to "conditional" until a three generation pedigree of DNA profiled parentage is established. "Unknown" will be noted on the registration or pedigree for the ancestor in question. Once a three generation pedigree is established, all future descendants will be given a standard registration status. Dogs with Conditional Registration may participate in the same AKC events in which ILP dogs may participate. To register a litter sired or produced by a dog with Conditional Registration, both the sire and dam must be AKC DNA Profiled.

The Conditional Registration program began in June 2007.
